The main preoccupation of the university shall be the search for knowledge through teaching and research, which would further translate it into a centre of attraction for all those in search of noble ideas for societal development. Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina commenced academic activities in the 2006/2007 academic session with an initial enrolment of 1,225 students across the 15 different programmes domiciled at the 3 pioneer Faculties of Natural and Applied Sciences, Humanities and Education. The Council consist of: Pro-Chancellor (Chairman); Vice-Chancellor; Deputy Vice-Chancellor(s) two persons appointed by the Senate from the members of that body; one person elected by the Congregation from among the members of that body not being a member of the Senate; one member elected by the Convocation from among members of that body; three persons to be appointed by the Visitor; the Commissioner or Chief Executive in charge of Higher Education in the State; the Permanent Secretary, Katsina State Ministry of Finance. The appointment is for a single term of 5 years as provided by the University law. The momentum of growth and development of the University achieved from its planning has been significantly sustained. The Katsina State House of Assembly on April 08 2009 passed a Law that changed the name of the University from Katsina State University to Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina. From 2007 to 2017 a total of 210 and 130 were sponsored for Masters and PhD degrees respectively, 174 have completed Master degrees and 51 have completed PhDs. The University has now lined up 119 staff in training (20 Masters and 98 PhDs) for sponsorships over the next two years with a different strategy that may include joint awards with partner Universities. Research groups are emerging within the Faculties and encouragement and incentives are provided for research projects that address national development.
